A Biblical and Spirit of Prophecy Perspective
God’s Eight Laws of Health for Restoring Body, Mind, and Spirit
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” —
3 John 1:2 (KJV)
Introduction
In a world where chronic disease, stress, anxiety, and unhealthy lifestyles have become commonplace, God has provided a simple yet powerful blueprint for abundant living. This blueprint is commonly known as NEWSTART—an acronym representing eight fundamental principles of health:
- N – Nutrition
- E – Exercise
- W – Water
- S – Sunshine
- T – Temperance
- A – Air
- R – Rest
- T – Trust in God
Although the acronym “NEWSTART” was developed many years after her lifetime, each of these principles is firmly rooted in Scripture and is consistently taught throughout the writings of Ellen G. White, whom Seventh-day Adventists recognize as having the prophetic gift. She emphasized that caring for our health is part of Christian stewardship and an essential aspect of preparing a people for Christ’s soon return.
Health Is Part of the Gospel
Ellen White repeatedly explained that Christ ministered to both the physical and spiritual needs of humanity. His healing ministry demonstrated that true religion encompasses the whole person.
She wrote:
“The gospel of health is to be firmly linked with the ministry of the word.”
This statement highlights that health ministry is not separate from evangelism—it is an entering wedge that opens hearts to receive the everlasting gospel.
When people experience relief from physical suffering, they are often more receptive to spiritual truth.
N — Nutrition
God’s original diet was given in Eden before sin entered the world.
“Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed… and every tree… to you it shall be for meat.” (Genesis 1:29)
Ellen White encouraged a diet based primarily on wholesome plant foods, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds.
She warned against excessive consumption of highly refined foods and rich, stimulating diets that burden the body.
She wrote that many diseases are the result of improper eating habits and that careful attention to diet can often prevent illness before medical intervention becomes necessary.
Proper nutrition nourishes the body, sharpens the mind, and enables believers to serve God more effectively.
E — Exercise
Physical activity is one of God’s natural remedies.
Rather than promoting inactivity, Ellen White encouraged useful labor, walking, gardening, and outdoor work.
She observed that regular exercise:
- strengthens muscles
- improves circulation
- increases endurance
- promotes mental clarity
- uplifts the spirit
She believed inactivity weakens both body and mind.
Today’s research confirms what she wrote over a century ago—that consistent movement significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and many other chronic illnesses.
W — Water
Water is essential to life.
Ellen White strongly advocated both drinking pure water and using it externally through hydrotherapy.
She wrote that pure water is among heaven’s greatest blessings.
Water:
- cleanses the body
- aids digestion
- regulates temperature
- supports every organ
- promotes healing
Simple water treatments were frequently recommended in her health ministry because they often proved effective without harmful side effects.
S — Sunshine
Sunlight is one of God’s free medicines.
She encouraged people to spend time outdoors in fresh air and sunshine whenever possible.
Today science recognizes that sunlight:
- helps produce Vitamin D
- supports immunity
- improves mood
- strengthens bones
- regulates sleep cycles
Long before these discoveries became widely accepted, Ellen White emphasized the value of sunshine for maintaining health.
T — Temperance
Temperance means more than avoiding alcohol and tobacco.
It involves practicing self-control in every aspect of life.
She wrote:
“True temperance teaches us to dispense entirely with everything hurtful and to use judiciously that which is healthful.”
This principle applies to:
- food
- entertainment
- work
- recreation
- technology
- speech
- emotions
A temperate lifestyle protects both physical health and spiritual vitality.
A — Air
Fresh air is another natural remedy.
Ellen White encouraged proper ventilation in homes, schools, churches, and hospitals.
Fresh air:
- improves oxygen circulation
- supports brain function
- strengthens immunity
- promotes restful sleep
She criticized tightly sealed living spaces that deprived people of clean, circulating air.
Modern medicine continues to affirm the importance of good air quality for respiratory and overall health.
R — Rest
Rest is both physical and spiritual.
God established the Sabbath at Creation as a weekly gift of restoration.
Daily sleep and weekly Sabbath rest allow the body and mind to recover from the demands of life.
Ellen White stressed that overwork shortens life and weakens usefulness.
She encouraged balanced living, recognizing that productivity depends upon adequate rest.
Proper rest includes:
- sufficient nightly sleep
- regular periods of relaxation
- time with family
- communion with God
- faithful observance of the Sabbath
T — Trust in God
The final and most important principle is trust in God.
No health program is complete without recognizing the Creator as the ultimate source of life and healing.
Faith brings:
- peace during trials
- hope in sickness
- courage in adversity
- strength to overcome unhealthy habits
Ellen White consistently pointed people to Jesus as the Great Physician.
She taught that while natural remedies are valuable, healing ultimately comes from God.
Prayer, Bible study, and a personal relationship with Christ bring emotional, mental, and spiritual restoration that no earthly medicine can fully provide.
NEWSTART and the Three Angels’ Messages
The Adventist health message is not merely about living longer; it is about living faithfully.
Ellen White described health reform as an “entering wedge” that opens doors for sharing the gospel. By helping people experience better health, believers can build relationships, relieve suffering, and direct hearts to Christ. Healthy living also prepares the mind to better understand and appreciate God’s truth, making the health message a practical companion to the proclamation of the Three Angels’ Messages.
Practical Ways to Live NEWSTART
Begin incorporating these principles into daily life:
- Eat more whole, plant-based foods.
- Exercise for at least 30 minutes most days.
- Drink adequate amounts of pure water.
- Spend time outdoors in sunlight.
- Practice moderation in all things.
- Breathe fresh air whenever possible.
- Prioritize sleep and Sabbath rest.
- Pray daily and cultivate a deeper trust in God.
Small, consistent changes often lead to lasting transformation.
Conclusion
The principles represented by NEWSTART are timeless because they are grounded in God’s design for humanity. Ellen G. White’s health counsels continue to inspire millions to adopt habits that support physical well-being while drawing them closer to Christ. As we care for the body—the “temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)—we become better equipped to serve others and glorify God in every aspect of life.
Living the NEWSTART lifestyle is ultimately an act of faithful stewardship. It reminds us that true health is not merely the absence of disease but the harmonious development of body, mind, and spirit under the guidance of our Creator. By embracing these principles and placing our trust in Jesus, we reflect His character and become more effective witnesses as we prepare ourselves and others for His soon return.
