Chapter 3 — When Desire Meets
Discipline: Guarding Your Heart Without
Hardening It
There comes a moment in every waiting journey when desire becomes loud. Not sinful desire—just human
desire. The desire to be chosen. To be pursued. To be seen through the eyes of someone who loves you with
intention. The desire for companionship, emotional safety, partnership, and the comfort of belonging to someone and having them belong to you.
Desire is not the enemy. God created it. He placed the longing for connection inside of you before He placed
breath in Adam’s lungs. But in a fallen world, desire often collides with impatience, loneliness, fantasies, and emotional vulnerability. When desire grows, your heart becomes more open, more tender—and therefore more exposed.
This is where discipline must rise.
Many people think guarding your heart means shutting it down. Becoming indifferent. Becoming cold. Acting like you don’t care. Pretending the hope is gone.
But Biblical guarding is not the hardening of the heart—it is the ordering of the heart.
To guard your heart is to protect what God is forming inside you without suffocating the hope He planted there.
To guard your heart is to feel deeply, but remain anchored. To desire connection, but not worship it.To want
marriage, but not lose yourself trying to get it.To hope, without becoming desperate. To care, without
abandoning discernment.
Your emotions are not your enemy—but they must be discipled.
There is a version of you that God is shaping in this waiting season. A version with boundaries. A version with self-control.
A version who knows when to open up and when to step back. A version who can feel desire but
not be ruled by it. A version who can love without losing dignity. A version who walks in wisdom even when
attraction is strong.
There is nothing godly about pretending you don’t want what God Himself created you to desire. But there is also nothing godly about letting your longing lead you into relationships that break your spirit.
Waiting becomes dangerous when desire starts driving and discipline becomes silent.
So how do you balance the two?
- You acknowledge your desire honestly before God.
Tell Him what you feel. Tell Him why it hurts. Tell Him what you want. He is not intimidated by your
vulnerability. In fact, He invites it.Silence before God often becomes rebellion before men. Honesty before God becomes peace before men. - You refuse to romanticize attention.
Not every person who shows interest is sent by God.Not every connection is covenant. Not every spark is the Holy
Spirit. Some people come wrapped in loneliness—not purpose. Some bring excitement—not destiny. Some bring charm— but not character.Attention is not the same as intention. - You slow down emotional access.
Your heart is a garden; not everyone deserves to walk through it.Let time reveal motives.Let silence reveal character.Let
distance reveal consistency.Let the Holy Spirit reveal truth. - You refuse to bond over brokenness.
If God closes a door, it is not rejection—it is protection. If He removes a person, it is mercy. If He delays a relationship, it
is alignment. - You let God interrupt anything not sent by Him.
Connection built on pain becomes a relationship full of wounds. Connection built on purpose becomes a relationship full of strength. - You never let loneliness make decisions for you.
- Loneliness leads to counterfeits. Counterfeits lead to soul ties. Soul ties lead to confusion. Confusion leads to delay. Guarding your heart is not punishment—it is wisdom.
- The truth is this: God does not want you numb. He wants you wise. He does not want your heart locked. He wants it aligned. He does not want you emotionless. He wants you grounded.
- There is a version of you who can remain soft without being naïve. Discerning without being suspicious. Hopeful without being vulnerable to manipulation. Open-hearted without being unguarded.
- This is the you God is forming in the waiting.
- Because a hardened heart cannot receive love, but an unguarded heart cannot sustain it.
- And God is preparing you for a love that will require both:
a tender heart to receive it, and a disciplined heart to protect it. ( The full book can be found in the Library #HEALTH-AND-FAMILY-)
- Loneliness leads to counterfeits. Counterfeits lead to soul ties. Soul ties lead to confusion. Confusion leads to delay. Guarding your heart is not punishment—it is wisdom.
